March 12, 2020 Update

Dear DeSoto ISD Employees & Families:

Due to the March 11, 2020,  announcement by the World Health Organization that the outbreak of the new coronavirus has been declared a pandemic, updated announcements by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and information from medical professionals and state and federal health officials, the following action is being taken in an attempt to minimize health and safety risks to the DeSoto ISD community.

DeSoto ISD will be closed Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20 (5 school days).

DeSoto ISD continues to actively monitor the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019 n-CoV) situation in conjunction with local and federal health authorities. While public health officials have not yet made closure a requirement for public institutions, given all that we know and what we can anticipate based on information from local, state and national agencies, we believe this is the most prudent course of action at this time.

In this update, you’ll find the following information:

  • DeSoto ISD will extend its Spring Break and will be closed March 16 - 20, 2020
  • District staff is asked to work from home
  • All events and extracurricular activities are canceled until further notice
  • We are planning for campuses to transition to distance learning, if necessary

While the district is closed, DeSoto ISD emergency and essential personnel will continue to consult with local health authorities and convene virtually and regularly in order to conduct a full and ongoing assessment of risks for students and staff.

Central Staff members are asked to work remotely and follow the directives of their respective Chief and/or Supervisors starting Monday, March 16, 2020.

Because DeSoto ISD desires to ensure continued service to students and families, district staff will finalize plans for distance learning and other student services.

Travel-Based Self-Reporting

During Spring Break many of our families and employees have traveled. We are following the recommendations of the CDC and Dallas County Health to remind staff and families about federal travel restrictions to and from affected areas. The list of affected countries changes continually, and we encourage anyone traveling to monitor the CDC travel website or the Texas Department of State Health Services coronavirus travel information website closely for updates. Today the countries with some level of CDC warnings or restrictions are China, Iran, Italy, South Korea and Japan.

Anyone who has traveled to one of the CDC-restricted areas is asked to self-report. Employees must self-report to their supervisors, and families should self-report to their campus principals. Employees and families who visited the affected areas will be asked to adhere to the CDC’s 14-day social distancing guidelines. Health officials are not currently requiring a self-quarantine for asymptomatic individuals who had family members travel to international locations.
