DeSoto Independent School District educators and administrators stepped out of their classrooms on a cold December morning to participate in the third annual DeSoto ISD Serves initiative, a program designed to foster connections between local schools and the community.
District staff members volunteered on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, sorting and organizing clothes, delivering meals to DeSoto residents with Meals on Wheels, decorating DeSoto City Hall and the city library, and spending time with seniors at the DeSoto Senior Center and Glenn Heights Community Center.
“It’s a big help,” said James Reed, a driver for the food pantry. “A lot of times, we don’t have enough help to take care of all the deliveries on all the routes. It’s a blessing and a huge help for us.”
In addition to delivering meals, volunteers also assisted at the food pantry, supporting its operations and teaching valuable lessons to students about community service. Barbara Douglas, a board member for the pantry, noted the importance of involving schools.
“It teaches the children that not everyone has the same opportunities, and they can feel proud once the teachers explain how they help those in need,” said Douglas.
This collaboration supports the pantry’s operations and offers valuable lessons for the community, particularly students. By continuing to take on these volunteer roles, educators strengthen the community and their relationships with DeSoto residents.
As the day came to a close, DeSoto ISD staff members left a lasting impact on the community.
With each meal delivered, every shelf organized, and every senior greeted with a warm smile, the volunteers not only helped meet immediate needs but also demonstrated the importance of compassion and community support.
“We love DeSoto Serves, said Desoto High School Principal Jasen Campbell. “It gives us the opportunity to give to the community and help our students and families. We’re excited to be here with the Mint Foundation and help get them ready for a program they do every year. The teachers and staff enjoy it, and we get just as much joy as the kids in the community get out of it.”
As the holiday season continues, get involved and make a positive impact in the community. DeSoto ISD encourages residents to consider supporting local organizations like the DeSoto
Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, and the Senior Center. Whether through volunteering, donations, or simply spreading awareness, every effort counts.
