"The word is ... anthropology."
The DeSoto Independent School District Spelling Bee, held Feb. 6 at the Fred Nickels Auditorium, brought together 16 talented spellers from across the district. The event was an emotional roller coaster—filled with joy, excitement and even tears—as parents, teachers and peers packed the auditorium, creating a heartwarming atmosphere of support and community pride.
After months of preparation and intense school-level competitions, Benjamin Pearson, a standout scholar from Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy, faced off against fierce competitors, including fellow peer Riley Redman of Ruby Young Talented and Gifted Academy in the final round. In the final round, Pearson confidently spelled the championship word, anthropology,
A collective sigh of relief followed by rousing applause as Pearson secured the district’s spelling title.
“I feel really good,” Pearson said, smiling after his victory. “It felt nice—pretty short, actually—so it seemed easy. It was a fun experience.”
But this year’s spelling bee was more than just a test of spelling skills—it was a showcase of resilience, determination and the friendly rivalry that pushes students to excel.
Beyond academic achievement, the competition served as a platform for students to build confidence, character and perseverance.
The support from the community was evident throughout the event, with every speller receiving cheers and encouragement, regardless of whether they advanced or were eliminated. Pearson, who had finished as last year’s runner-up, returned stronger and more determined, ultimately claiming the district title this time around.
For Redman, the runner-up, the journey isn’t over yet.
“This won’t be my last spelling bee,” he said. “I’m heading to the Dallas ISD Spelling Bee next, so I’m hoping for the best—and praying that I win the next one.”
With his victory, Pearson now advances to the regional qualifiers, moving one step closer to competing in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee—a nationwide competition that celebrates academic excellence and linguistic mastery.
Reflecting on his journey, Pearson offered advice to future competitors.
“Just don’t be nervous. It’ll be OK, especially if you studied. And if you didn’t, just try not to worry—do your best.”
Next up for these young eagles will be the Dallas County Public School Spelling Bee this Thursday, Feb. 13, at 6:00 p.m. at McCulloch Intermediate and Highland Park Middle School in Dallas. Additionally, the two winners from that bee will progress to the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for Saturday, March 8. The location for that bee has yet to be determined.
