DeSoto Independent School District is proud to announce the finalists for the 2024–2025 Principal of the Year award: Keishla Coleman, Principal of Amber Terrace Early Childhood Learning Center, and Demitree Tatum, Principal of Woodridge Fine Arts and Gifted Academy.

These outstanding leaders exemplify the district’s commitment to academic excellence, student-centered leadership, and transformational campus culture. The 2025 Principal of the Year will be announced at Cadence of Celebration on May 16, 2025—DeSoto ISD’s annual employee recognition banquet celebrating excellence in education.

Kieshla Coleman, Principal, Amber Terrace Early Childhood Learning Center

With over 20 years in education, Keishla Coleman leads Amber Terrace Early Childhood Learning Center, home to DeSoto ISD’s youngest scholars in Pre-K 3 and 4. A graduate of Texas A&M University-Commerce and Prairie View A&M University, Coleman is known for cultivating a nurturing and engaging environment that lays strong academic and social foundations.

“I believe that when we lead with emotional intelligence and build authentic relationships with students, families, and staff, we create a school community where everyone thrives,” said Coleman. “This recognition is not just about me—it reflects the love and commitment our entire Amber Terrace team pours into our scholars every day.”

Demitree Tatum, Principal, Woodridge Fine Arts and Gifted Academy

Since taking the helm at Woodridge in 2021, Demitree Tatum has leveraged her 25+ years of experience to foster a dynamic learning environment that blends fine arts, gifted education, and academic rigor. A graduate of the University of North Texas and Concordia University, Tatum is certified in Gifted Education and Instructional Leadership.

“At Woodridge, we’re preparing future-ready learners who think critically, create boldly, and lead confidently,” said Tatum. “Being named a finalist is a celebration of our school community’s shared vision, hard work, and unwavering belief in our students’ potential.”

DeSoto ISD Chief Academic Officer Stephanie McCloud praised both finalists for their instructional leadership and their ability to transform campuses into thriving academic communities.

“Principals Coleman and Tatum are phenomenal educators who embody the spirit of excellence and equity that defines DeSoto ISD,” said McCloud. “Their leadership has a measurable impact on student success and staff morale, and we’re proud to celebrate their contributions.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Usamah Rodgers added, “These women are more than just leaders; they are shaping the future of education in our district. Their unwavering dedication to cultivating environments where every child can grow, learn, and flourish is inspiring. We are honored to recognize them as Principal of the Year finalists.”
