DeSoto ISD Observes Hispanic Heritage Month with Districtwide Learning and Celebration

DeSoto Independent School District proudly joins communities
across the nation in recognizing and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
(September 15–October 15). In DeSoto ISD, this observance is more than a
commemoration—it is a commitment to honoring culture, uplifting student voices,
and enhancing learning through exposure to history, traditions, music, food,
beliefs, and values that help deepen understanding of the human experience.
“Recognizing the cultural identities represented in our
schools is a critical part of our work to prepare students to thrive in a
global community,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of Schools.
“Hispanic Heritage Month allows us to intentionally celebrate the contributions
of Hispanic culture while giving our scholars opportunities to learn, connect,
and grow.”
Throughout the month, DeSoto ISD is presenting a range of
initiatives designed to engage scholars, staff, families, and the community in
meaningful ways.
- Social
Media Campaign: The district has launched a series of digital features
including a photo-based homage to historical figures from Hispanic
culture selected by students. Additionally, POV spotlights will
highlight perspectives from voices across the district.
- Community
Celebration: The observance will culminate in a special community
event on Wednesday, October 9, where families, scholars, staff, and
community stakeholders are invited to experience DeSoto ISD’s tribute to
Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration will feature student art,
literature, performances, and other special presentations. More details
will be shared as they become available.
- Classroom
Learning Experiences: Under the leadership of Carmina Moreno, the
district’s newly appointed Director of Emergent Bilingual Services and
Languages Other than English (LOTE), teachers have been equipped with
culturally rich academic resources and curricular activities to immerse
students in Hispanic history and culture.
Chief Academic Officer Stephanie McCloud emphasized
the importance of weaving cultural observances into the learning experience,
“Student achievement is strengthened when education goes beyond textbooks and
test scores. Cultural celebrations like Hispanic Heritage Month enrich our
scholars’ understanding of humanity and foster appreciation for diversity and
inclusion.”
DeSoto ISD invites all stakeholders to follow along on
district social media channels throughout Hispanic Heritage Month and to join
the October 9 celebration as the district honors culture, history, and the
voices of its scholars.
Carmina Moreno, Director of Emergent Bilingual Services
and LOTE, said, “Our goal is to create spaces where students not only learn
about Hispanic culture but also see themselves reflected in the lessons, the
celebrations, and the stories we uplift. Culture and language are central to
identity, and it is vital that we honor and elevate these voices in our
classrooms and across the district.”
