DeSoto ISD Observes World Down Syndrome Month, Highlighting Services, Supports, and Educational Goals

DeSoto Independent School District (ISD) proudly joins
communities nationwide in recognizing World Down Syndrome Month, promoting
awareness, understanding, and inclusion of students with Down syndrome. This
observance underscores the district’s ongoing commitment to providing
comprehensive services, supports, and educational opportunities for students
and families impacted by Down syndrome.
“Our commitment to students with Down syndrome is
unwavering,” said Dr. Usamah Rodgers, Superintendent of DeSoto ISD.
“Every student deserves an environment where they can thrive academically,
socially, and emotionally. Observances like World Down Syndrome Month allow us to
highlight the remarkable achievements of our students and reinforce our
district-wide dedication to inclusion.”
Each year, DeSoto ISD recognizes and honors our special Eagle scholars through campus-level
and district-led initiatives, either during the month of October or on March
21, ensuring all students, staff, and families are engaged in celebrating
diversity and fostering inclusive learning environments.
Stephanie Fuller, Executive Director of Special
Populations, added, “Providing tailored services and supports, including
individualized education plans and access to therapies, ensures our students
with Down syndrome receive the opportunities they need to reach their full
potential. Family engagement is a cornerstone of our approach, and we value the
input of parents and caregivers in shaping each child’s educational journey.”
District efforts have also included awareness campaigns,
educational programming, and collaborative activities between students,
families, and educators.
Stephanie McCloud, Chief Academic Officer,
emphasized, “Observances around Down Syndrome are a reminder of the importance
of inclusive classrooms where all learners can excel. At DeSoto ISD, we
celebrate diversity and work intentionally to create meaningful learning
experiences that meet the unique needs of every student.”
DeSoto ISD offers a variety of services and supports for
students with Down syndrome, including individualized education plans (IEPs),
specialized instructional strategies, and access to speech, occupational, and
physical therapy. The district also emphasizes family engagement, ensuring that
parents and caregivers are active partners in shaping their children’s
educational experiences.
The district encourages families, staff, and community
members to participate in upcoming awareness activities. Feedback and
suggestions from parents and advocates are always welcomed, helping DeSoto ISD
continually refine its programs and initiatives to better serve students with
Down syndrome.
