In observance of National School Communicators Day, DeSoto Independent School District proudly celebrates the dedicated professionals of the district’s Communications Department whose work helps inform, engage, protect, and connect the DeSoto ISD community each day.

National School Communicators Day recognizes the essential role communications professionals play in public education through strategic storytelling, crisis communications, community engagement, media relations, branding, marketing, and stakeholder support. School communicators serve as trusted voices and strategic partners who help school systems build relationships, strengthen culture, and elevate the stories of students, educators, and communities.

The DeSoto ISD Communications Department consists of five dedicated team members:

  • Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones, Chief Communications Officer
  • Jacquinette Murphy, Assistant Director of Communications
  • Joshua Carter, Communications Coordinator
  • Cleondria Bryant, Communications Specialist
  • Charity Chiles, Executive Administrative Assistant and District Receptionist

Together, the team has worked to significantly expand the scope, depth, breadth, quality, and strategic impact of communications services across DeSoto ISD. Under the leadership of Chief Communications Officer Tiffanie Blackmon-Jones, the department evolved from a traditional information office into a comprehensive strategic communications, marketing, and engagement operation designed to support organizational excellence and community trust.

Over the years, the department has played a critical role in navigating organizational transitions, crisis response efforts, governance changes, enrollment initiatives, pandemic communications, community engagement efforts, and districtwide transformational work. At the same time, the team consistently worked to amplify the stories, achievements, resilience, and excellence of DeSoto ISD students, educators, staff, and families.

Through innovative, strategic, and fiscally responsible communications practices, the department helped establish systems, standards, workflows, and marketing frameworks that strengthened district operations and visibility while supporting enrollment and organizational stability efforts.

The team’s work has also helped position DeSoto ISD as a trusted and respected source within the media landscape through proactive storytelling and strong media partnerships. As a result, the district has earned positive coverage in major national and regional outlets including CNN, The Washington Post, The Associated Press, The New York Times, and CBS News.

Despite staffing reductions and operational challenges in recent years, the department continued to sustain a high level of service and operational continuity through innovative approaches, including the implementation of a remote contracted workforce model and enhanced project management systems designed to maximize efficiency and fiscal responsibility.

Collectively, the department continued to successfully manage:

  • Media relations
  • Internal and executive communications
  • Social media management
  • Crisis communications
  • Open records requests
  • Website management and revisions
  • District event coverage

During this period, the team:

  • Completed more than 200 communications project requests
  • Processed more than 350 website revision requests
  • Developed branding and marketing assets for campuses across the district
  • Supported communications for major district events, initiatives, and crisis situations

Additionally, the department helped modernize district branding, strengthen stakeholder communication systems, enhance enrollment marketing infrastructure, and support improvements to the district’s digital and web presence.

The work of the department has also received recognition from professional organizations and academic institutions for excellence and innovation in educational communications and public relations, reflecting the team’s commitment to advancing best practices in public education communications.
