DeSoto Independent School District proudly celebrated the graduation of the DeSoto High School Class of 2026, honoring a class of scholars whose perseverance, leadership and achievement reflect the continued excellence of Eagle Nation.
The commencement ceremony was a memorable celebration of academic accomplishment, family pride and the promise of what comes next as graduates crossed the stage and prepared to soar into college, careers, military service, entrepreneurship and other postsecondary opportunities. Highlighting the class's exceptional academic and future-forward focus, this year's seniors earned nearly $18 million in scholarships, while an impressive 56 seniors achieved the monumental milestone of earning their associate degree alongside their high school diploma.
“Graduation is one of the most powerful moments in the life of a school district because it represents the fulfillment of our mission,” said Brent S. Mitchell, DeSoto ISD interim superintendent of schools. “The Class of 2026 has demonstrated perseverance, excellence and pride, and we are excited to see the impact they will make as they move forward into the next chapter of their lives.”
The evening also highlighted the achievements of the Class of 2026’s top academic scholars, including valedictorian Sofia Villacorta and salutatorian Desiree Munguia.
Villacorta’s recognition as valedictorian carries special meaning for the DeSoto High School community. She continues a remarkable family legacy, following in the footsteps of her older sister, who also graduated from DeSoto High School as valedictorian. Her accomplishment reflects not only individual academic excellence, but also a family commitment to scholarship, discipline and Eagle pride.
Munguia, the Class of 2026 salutatorian, was also celebrated for her academic dedication, leadership and commitment to excellence throughout her high school journey. Her achievement places her among the district’s highest performing scholars and serves as an example of the focus, determination and character DeSoto ISD works to cultivate in every student.
Together, Villacorta and Munguia represent the strength of the Class of 2026, a class defined by hard work, resilience and the support of families, educators and mentors who helped guide them to this milestone.
DeSoto High School Principal Leon Darden commended the graduates for their commitment and encouraged them to continue carrying the lessons, values and spirit of DeSoto with them beyond graduation.
“From the beginning, I have said the Class of 2026 is the greatest to ever exist, and they proved it through their hard work, leadership and perseverance,” Darden said. “These scholars have left their mark on DeSoto High School, and as they move forward, I know they will continue to represent Eagle Nation with excellence, confidence and purpose.”
The graduation ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the partnership between students, families, teachers, staff and the broader DeSoto ISD community. Each graduate’s walk across the stage represented years of learning, sacrifice, encouragement and determination.
