DeSoto Independent School District will join districts across Texas in celebrating Gifted & Talented (G/T) Awareness Week from April 6–10, 2026, recognizing the achievements of gifted learners and raising awareness about their unique academic and social-emotional needs.
Established through Texas House Concurrent Resolution 64 and championed by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented, this annual observance highlights the importance of providing differentiated, meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond traditional instruction for advanced learners.
Throughout the week, DeSoto ISD K–8 campuses will engage students, teachers, and families in themed activities designed to promote creativity, critical thinking, and excellence. Activities include “Mastermind Monday” with puzzles and chess, “Talented Tuesday” highlighting student identity, STAAR-focused “Going for Gold” and “Reaching for the STAARS” days, and “Future Ready Friday,” which encourages career exploration and professional dress.
“Gifted learners require intentional, responsive instruction that nurtures both their intellectual curiosity and social-emotional development,” said Robin Johnson-Ford, Director of Advanced Academics for DeSoto ISD. “G/T Awareness Week is an opportunity for us to celebrate their strengths while also reinforcing our responsibility to provide learning experiences that challenge, engage, and inspire them every day.”
Campus leaders across the district emphasize the importance of creating environments where gifted students can thrive.
“At Woodridge Fine Arts and Gifted Academy, we are committed to cultivating creativity and innovation in every scholar,” said Demitree Tatum, principal. “This week allows us to intentionally celebrate the unique talents of our students while ensuring they feel seen, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.”
Similarly, leadership at Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy underscores the importance of aligning gifted education with future readiness.
“Our goal is to prepare students not just for academic success, but for meaningful impact in an ever-evolving world,” said Yolanda Hanspard, principal. “By fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation, we are equipping our gifted learners with the tools they need to lead and excel.”
In addition to campus-based activities, families are invited to participate in a virtual webinar, “Supporting Your Gifted Child: 5 Tips for Your Parenting Journey,” on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m. CST. The session will provide practical strategies to help parents support the academic and emotional development of gifted students.
G/T Awareness Week reinforces DeSoto ISD’s commitment to ensuring that advanced learners receive tailored educational experiences that promote depth, complexity, and lifelong success.
