DeSoto Independent School District is proud to announce the appointment of William  Henderson as the new DeSoto High School boy's track coach.

“We are excited to work alongside Coach Henderson and welcome him to the Eagles Athletics family,” said DeSoto ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Claude Mathis. “We are confident that the expertise and experience he will provide to his staff, scholars, and their families will demonstrate his commitment to excellence and achievement here in DeSoto.”

Henderson brings a wealth of experience in athlete development and mentorship to his role at DHS has maintained an active presence in track and field programs across North Texas fostering academic and athletic potential through sports in community-based programs before assuming a role as the assistant girls' track and field coach at Arlington Seguin High School supporting notable achievement inclusive of multiple state appearances and medals before transitioning to Duncanville ISD as the associate head track and field coach. Following his belief and commitment to whole child development, Henderson initiated the “I Am a Man” mentoring program for male scholars and was an active contributor to the toe Teacher Leadership Council In Duncanville ISD during his service there. 

Henderson was a key contributor to the success of the Duncanville Boys’ Track and Field program. Under his leadership, scholar-athletes regularly ranked among district, area, regional, state, and national levels garnering numerous medals and accolades including three consecutive team silver medals at the UIL Track and Field state meet, including most recently during the 2023 season where he led the program as the interim head coach guiding the team to district and area championships.

Henderson’s coaching tenure has seen the establishment of five school records, including impressive feats in the 800m, 4x400m, and 4x800m Relays. His dedication has facilitated scholarships for student-athletes to prestigious institutions such as Howard University, Texas A&M University, University of Arizona, Sam Houston State University, Arizona State University, and Langston University. Additionally, William has contributed to Duncanville High School’s football program by enhancing summer training with speed and conditioning expertise. Henderson holds a Level II certification as a U.S.A. Track and Field coach and official and actively engages with the 100 Black Men of Greater Dallas/Fort Worth, Inc. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to track & field, he was honored with induction into the Jarvis Christian College (University) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022, celebrating his enduring impact on athletics and mentoring.

Henderson is a graduate of Jarvis Christian College where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a specialization in accounting and where he served as an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. as well as Future Business Leaders of America.

The DeSoto High School track and athletics programs are an integral part of the DeSoto ISD Triple-A Experience, the district’s well-rounded and holistic approach to education centered on academics, arts and athletics.
