This Saturday, April 6, 2024, the DeSoto Independent School District will host the district’s annual Pre-K Kickoff from 9 am to noon at Amber Terrace Early Learning Center located at 224 Amber Lane in DeSoto.

The Pre-K Kickoff provides families of soon-to-be three- and four-year-old scholars assistance in creating an account for online enrollment or confirming parent access to an existing family enrollment account. At the event, families can tour the campus and meet district representatives from departments such as Emergent Bilingual Education (formerly ESL), Special Education Services, Montessori Early Childhood Learning, and Head Start.

Focused on creating a fun and engaging environment for scholars, the Amber Terrace Pre-K Kickoff will also feature a KidZone activity space for scholars with access to face painting, bounce houses, and free concessions like popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy!

Because the Pre-K Kickoff event will focus on meeting families and building scholars’ excitement for starting their learning journeys, the event will not accommodate actual enrollment; however, parents can reserve a time to complete enrollment during the registration events set to take place from April 8-10 at the former DeSoto East Middle School located at 601  Belt Line Road in DeSoto.

The enrollment and online registration assistance windows are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • Monday, April 8, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 9, 2024: from 7:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 10, 2024: from 7:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Prekindergarten education is a great foundation for lifelong learning and successful academic foundations for students. The case for early childhood education is clear. Data shows scholars exposed to early childhood education programs tend to exercise stronger critical and creative thinking skills, outperform their peers academically, and tend to advance further in their careers.

At DeSoto ISD’s Amber Terrace Early Childhood Learning Center, families experience a campus solely dedicated to shaping and supporting young learners and their families.

To support the completion of early childhood enrollment in DeSoto ISD, families are asked to submit the following materials:

  • Original copy of the scholar’s birth certificate (see below)
  • Scholar’s immunization records
  • Scholar’s Social Security card
  • Proof of residency (current water, gas, or electricity bill) and
  • Parent/guardian driver’s license

Registration is for eligible students as defined by the Texas Legislature.  A child is eligible for public Pre-K if the child is age 3 or 4 on or before Sept. 1.

Texas.gov reminds parents that they can go directly to  Texas.gov  and order a certified birth certificate for $22, the same price as a walk-in or mail order. This online service, offered in English and Spanish, provides parents with a straightforward, secure option for ordering their child’s birth certificate. The orders are fulfilled by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
