LETS GEAR UP hosted the inaugural Senior Scholarship Day Celebration on May 13. This senior celebration recognized all seniors who received any amount of scholarship funding to announce their awards with the school community. During this evening a series of community awards were presented to DeSoto High School seniors.

The evening of honors was hosted by DHS Assistant Principal Dr. James McBride and ECHS Principal Dr. Labotta Taylor with support for the NEXT GENeration GEAR UP, the Career and Technical Education, College Career, and Military Readiness team, and the staff of DeSoto High School School.

DeSoto ISD LETS GEAR UP Site Coordinator Cedric Ford said, “Due to the pandemic, the plans for a traditional senior awards ceremony had to be adjusted, so LET’S GEAR UP stepped in to ensure our Forever ‘21 senior class were recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments.”

Approximately 30 students and their families attended this in-person event and announced scholarship awards ranging from $500 to over $100,000.

One of the partnering organizations that presented scholarships included the DeSoto High School PTSA whose members awarded two seniors $500 scholarships.

The Concerned DeSoto Citizens distributed a total of $10,000 in scholarships to three seniors, including The Curtistene S. McCowan Scholar award for $5,000 dollars to Top 10 scholar Laci Nelson. This award was presented by Leon McCowan, husband of the late honorable City of DeSoto Mayor Curtistene S. McCowan, who passed away last year.
