At the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic held in Chicago, the Minority Band Director's National Association awarded DeSoto High School Band Director Delton Brown with the Meritorious Achievement Award, as recognized at their annual national meeting.

The award was chosen from a nomination made by organization members for outstanding contributions to band and music education to local, regional, and/or national communities. It acknowledges outstanding performances, presentations, and service.

Factors that contributed to Brown’s nomination and receipt of this award included:

  •  DeSoto High School Band’s performance at the Historically Black Colleges and Universities National Band Director's Convention in Atlanta, GA during the 2021-2022 school year.
  • In 2020, Brown was a presenter at our state's convention (Texas Music Educators Association) on the topic "Keepin' It Real: An Urban Music Educators Guide. Brown was one of a few Black males who have presented at TMEA as a single presenter.
  • That same year, Brown was also a presenter at the SHSU Workshop - The Art of Teaching Music on the subject matter "Pandemic?? How Dare You!!"
  • In 2019 the marching band was the National Runner-Up in the USBANDS Southern States Championships Contest in Chattanooga, TN.
  • Also in 2019, the Eagle band program was the national winner of the Dr. William P. Foster Program of Excellence Award. That particular award was (and still is) a huge deal for the DHS band program and was awarded at the Midwest Clinic by the National Band Association, Music For All, and the College Band Directors National Association. The DHS Band Program also received a proclamation from the state of Texas from Rep. Carl Sherman for this award.
