DeSoto ISD scholars are talented inside and outside of the classroom creating positive paths and experiences to aid their future success. Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy third-grade student, Skylar DuPree, a youth actress, had the opportunity to perform a celebratory commemoration of Dr. King with The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) during the Emmy Award-winning 40th Annual Black Music and the Civil Rights Movement Concert in January.


Dupree’s participation in this evening of historical remembrance is an actualization of the district’s mission to ensure students learn and grow to their highest levels.


Viewers can watch the concert broadcast on the following CBS network stations at the times assigned below. 


  • Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 p.m. on CBS 11 
  • Sunday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. on TXA 21
  • An encore presentation will be on Sunday, March 5 at 1 p.m. on TXA 21.

The annual evening concert is composed of music, dance, and spoken word accompanied by TBAAL’s 200-member concert ensemble is organized and produced by Curtis King, the Black Academy of Arts and Letters founder, and president, and is a stately tribute to MLK and the civil rights struggle of the 1960s. 


Each year, several renowned music artists and media professionals headline this evening of remembrance. This year, the special guests were Grammy Award Winning gospel singer LeAndria Johnson, and singer, songwriter, and dancer Avery Wilson.
