Dyslexia

DeSoto ISD works diligently to provide an identification process, intervention, and appropriate instructional services for all students with dyslexia. We continually enhance our teacher training and instructional practices based on the latest research and legislation.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Department Vision Statement
Our vision is to provide a dyslexia-friendly environment that enables dyslexic students to reach their full potential and give them the tools to support their needs.

Department Mission Statement
The Dyslexia Program in DeSoto ISD, in partnership with parents, teachers, and administrators, will provide all students identified with dyslexia with research-based instruction and academic support to prepare them to be successful, lifetime readers and writers.
